Комментируют участники группы: "На этом альбоме мы использовали совершенно другой подход. Каждая песня на 'The Unforgiving' была написана в соответствии с текстом Стива. Основные персонажи комикса являются отражением героев наших песен. Эта концепция подтолкнула нас и дала нам вдохновение на то, чтобы по-новому подойти к нашему саунду. В результате мы сочинили свои самые лучшие песни на сегодняшний день".

Группа была сформирована в Бело Оризонте, Бразилия, в 1984 году братьями Игорем (ударные) и Максом Кавалера (вокал, гитара), совместно с Пауло Джейр (бас) и гитаристом Джаиро Гуэдесом.
За всю свою карьеру «Sepultura» сменила много музыкальных жанров, среди которых дэт-метал, трэш-метал, грув-метал, нью-метал, альтернативный метал и хардкор, на котором группа пока что остановилась. Со временем в группе начались разногласия между Максом Кавалера и остальными участниками коллектива, в результате которых в 1996 году Макс покинул состав и основал новый проект Soulfly. Для многих поклонников история «Sepultura» на этом закончилась и они преданно «ушли» за Максом Кавалера и его новым проектом.
Однако оставшиеся "сепультуровцы" не стали вешать носы, а продолжили работу с новым вокалистом…
А в 2008 году, после 10 летних разногласий Игорь и Макс вновь объеденились в рамках совместного проекта Cavalera Conspiracy
